When should my child first start seeing the dentist?
We generally recommend that children should start coming in for regular dental appointments by the age of three if not sooner. Most pediatric dentists will urge parents to bring their child to the dentist sometime before their first birthday. These early-age appointments are very important for two reasons.
First, they’ll give our team the chance to make sure their smile is developing correctly. Catching a problem early and treating it quickly is usually much easier (and less expensive!) when a child is young. Plus, these visits will also give your child a chance to form a positive association with going to the dentist, which will help make future visits much easier and ensure they continue going even as they become more independent.
What will their first visit be like?
After being greeted by our smiling team, we’ll give you and your child a brief tour of our office so they have time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Once they seem comfortable, you’ll have a chance to meet their dentist and talk about their dental history. After chatting with your child for a bit, they’ll perform a quick oral exam and maybe a cleaning if it’s alright with them. From there, they’ll discuss their findings and offer you strategies on how to take care of their growing smile.
