A deep cleaning is usually our first line of defense again early-stage gum disease, better known as gingivitis. It actually consists of two separate procedures called scaling and root planing. For scaling, your dentist will use an ultrasonic scaler to break up and clear away any plaque and tartar deposits located on and around your gum line. Then, root planing will be used to gently smooth out the rough surfaces of your teeth’s roots, making you less likely to accumulate plaque and develop gum disease in the future.
